GTower is a SGD$200+ million 30-storey office-retail-hotel development being built on 199, Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. It is slated to be officially opened only in 2009. More interestingly, it is the first building in Malaysia to achieve the globally recognised BCA Green Mark GOLD award (Provisional) from our very own Building & Construction Authority.

Now, the GOLD rating means that GTower is 20 per cent more energy-efficient than a normal building. Some of its green features are:

1. A pay-as-you-use billing system for the use of air-conditioning by its tenants

2. Special glass panels that lower the amount of heat transmitted from the external environment to the interior of the building

3. A rain water harvesting/recycling system

4. Green spaces "decorated" with paintings and potted plants

5. A ventilation system that channels more oxygen into different parts of the building when the level of carbon dioxide in the air rises

2. Customise your blog by adding various page elements to it. Please take note: All types of page elements are allowed except tagboards. Once again, your blog MUST not have a tagboard.

3. Post a blog entry welcoming readers of your group blog and introducing your group members. Remember, there's NO maximum word count for blogs entries. Ensure that your entries are written in standard English and not inconsiderate in any way.

The Write Invention (geddit?)

The Idea!

In 1938, while working as a journalist, Hungarian Ladislao José Bíró noticed that the ink used in newspaper printing dried quickly, leaving the paper dry and smudge-free. He tried using the same ink in a fountain pen because it is a great idea to use ink that dries quickly, resulting in smudge-free handwriting.

The Problem?

However, Bíró found that the ink would not flow into the nib, as it was too viscous (thick).

The Solution.

Working with his brother Georg, a chemist, Bíró developed a new tip consisting of a ball that was free to turn in a socket, and as it turned it would pick up the ink from a cartridge and then roll to deposit it on the paper. He patented the invention in Paris in the same year.

The Legacy...

In 1950 Marcel Bich bought from Bíró the patent for the pen, which soon became the main product of his Bic company (which is still around). Ballpoint pens are still widely referred to as a biro in many European countries, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Argentina's Inventor's Day is celebrated on Bíró's birthday, September 29. A fitting honour indeed. (:

Most importantly, millions of students and teachers use ballpoint pens in schools all over the world!

What You Have To Do

Before the end of Term 4 Week 2 (17 - 23 September), you should complete the following tasks:

1. Make sure that you complete at least 5 of the 8 blogging tasks (including Point 2 of this entry) I have assigned through the entries published on this blog so far. In addition, please be informed that PW groups without blogs will be automatically awarded the Below Expectations (BE) grade. That is the equivalent of a D7, a grade that indicates failure. The BE grade will also be awarded to groups with blogs that comprise just one or very few entries.

Generally speaking, to considered for the Meeting Expectations (ME) grade, a PW blog should have published more than half the number of expected entries. An expected entry is one that a PW group composes and publishes in response to a blogging task (for example, Point 2).

2. Post a new blog entry showcasing a modern-day invention that has solved one of Man's many problems. The size of this problem does not matter.

3. Get your friends in Secondary 1 Humility to create their group blogs, if they have yet to do so. You should find out how much they know before offering them some advice. Do lend them a helping hand if they request for help.

Imagine this: World leaders creating a FILA chart as their first step to solving this problem.

What You Have To Do

Before the end of Term 4 Week 1 (10 - 16 September), you should complete the following tasks:

1. Submit all your educational materials as well as PW file by 14 September, Friday to your Science teacher. Here are some items that you can add to your package:

Complusory

(a) All educational materials

Recommended

(b) All instances of work that was completed by your group
(c) Your FILA chart
(d) 2 to 3 examples of research that was conducted by group
(e) Your report (for English Language)
(f) Printout of materials related to your presentation (for English Language)

Extras

(g) Diskette/CD-R containing files related to your project
(h) A cover page for your PW file
(indicate the roles of all group members as well as the URL of your PW blog)
(i) Anything that could improve your marks/grade for Science/PW.

2. Post a new blog entry explaining how you would go about solving a common problem that you as well as other students have encountered in our school with the use of the FILA chart. Your chart does not have to be very detailed; 3 to 4 points per each component (Facts, Ideas, Learning Issues & Action Plan) will do. The size of this problem does not matter.

3. Get your friends to create their group blogs, if they have yet to do so. This is my second warning to PW groups from Secondary 1 Charity, 1 Diligence & 1 Unity that have not informed me the URLs of their PW blogs via email. I hope you will do as instructed as soon as possible, before I pay your class a visit.

What You Have To Do

Before the end of the September holidays (2 - 9 September), you should complete the following tasks:

1. Ensure that all your educational materials as well as PW file is ready for submission in the first week of Term 4. The deadline for this round of submission is 14 September, Friday. Place your materials in either an envelope, a folder, a plastic holder or a ziplock bag and submit them along with your file to your Science teacher (look, it is different this time round). If you have submitted these items to either one of your PW teachers in Term 3, he or she will pass all of them to your Science teacher on your behalf. (:

2. Make sure that you complete at least 4 of the 6 blogging tasks (scroll down and count them all) I have assigned through the entries published on this blog so far. I believe it is perfectly acceptable for me to expect you to complete more than half of them (4 out of 6 tasks) as soon as possible.

3. Get your friends to create their group blogs, if they have yet to do so. I would like to take this opportunity to issue my first warning to PW groups from Secondary 1 Charity, 1 Diligence, 1 Sincerity & 1 Unity that have not informed me the URLs of their PW blogs via email. I hope you will do as instructed as soon as possible.

What You Have To Do

Before the end of Term 3 Week 9 & 10 (20 - 31 August), you should complete the following tasks:

1. Place all your educational materials in either an envelope, a folder, a plastic holder or a ziplock bag and submit them along with your PW file to either one of your PW teachers. The first deadline for the submission of this package is 31 August 2007, Friday. This means that there is a second deadline - read all about it in my next blog entry. You can submit it as early as 27 August 2007, Monday.

2. Post a new blog entry showcasing the best part/section of your 400-word REPORT (not the presentation) and explain why you think it is the best. It should not be just a sentence, okay?

3. Get your friends to create their group blogs, if they have yet to do so. Many PW groups from Secondary 1 Charity, 1 Diligence, 1 Sincerity & 1 Unity have not informed me the URLs of their PW blogs via email, so it is quite natural for me to assume that they do not have one. The following advertisement won Gold in The One Show 2007:

The winning ad, The Stairs, was one of three international designs awarded Gold in the Poster Single category in July 2007. It was created by Ace:Daytons Advertising, which is part of the Ad Planet Group. It was commissioned by Disabled People Association (DPA).

Ace:Daytons Advertising also won one of four Silvers for the Poster Campaign category in the same competition. The print-only poster campaign ran in The New Paper from 26 to 28 April and in The Business Times on 26, 27 and 30 April.

There are five designs, each with a different symbol. The designs have a wheelchair icon in front of a large symbol of steps, a steep slope, a hump, a toilet bowl and a bus. All five symbols carried the same message: The move towards a truly global city calls out for common and disability-friendly design in buildings and facilities.

LISTEN UP!

ONE: The PW blog that you are supposed to create should be a group blog, i.e. ONE blog per PW group. (:

TWO: Your Science teachers will not teach Chapter 16 of your Secondary 1 Science textbook, Abuses to Life Processes. Instead, you have to go through this chapter without teacher supervision (self-learning) and use some of information found in it to design educational/publicity materials in your group.

THREE: The educational materials that your group will eventually create should be based on ONE type of abuse: Alcohol OR Drug OR Tobacco Abuse.
